Dream 8/30/2009 [30 Aug 2009|09:48am]
My dream last night:

- Sergio Sempertegui interrupted a meeting at my work to trash talk about the FSU game.
- I could fly.
- Someone cheated me from two dollars, and I vowed vengeance.
- A Nigerian man wanted to stab me, and I dissuaded him.
- Before Sergio interrupted the meeting, I talked about how much I liked "Pootie Tang."
- I ran into Cathy Malmat, and she started rambling about how much she hated the Jets.
- I committed suicide, but when I did, all that happened was the screen flipped like in NCAA after an interception.
- I was in a bookstore waiting in line, still stewing about the two dollars.  Then my mom told me the man had wound up in the hospital, and I was giddy about it.
- I had to save a little boy from an evil villain.  To do so, I utilized my flying ability, as well as my newfound invisibility.

Dream Recap!

Northeast High was having a class trip to Siberia, and I really wanted to go despite having graduated.  So, I showed up on the bus I had always taken there and during the ride sung a song that included the words "Home of Northeast High School!  Greatest there can ever be!" I wish I could remember more of the words, but I do at least remember the tone of it.  Anyway, as I sang, I swung around a pot in one hand and a bag of rice in the other.  As soon as we got there, I jumped off, continued the song, and continued swinging what I had in my hands.  But then I came across somebody being carried off in a stretcher and felt bad for my enthusiasm.  I also walked past a girl I know from UM and a guy I met at Monash, but I just recognized them as being underclassmen at Northeast.  I made my way to Mrs. Mohler's class and then woke up.

Hmm. [06 Mar 2009|09:16pm]
So, I didn't get into a summer program I applied for.  I was talking to my mom and she said, "What?  Are they only looking for people named Tim Tebow!?!"

My mom doesn't even know the difference between Florida and Florida State, nor very much about sports, yet she said that.

I hate the media.

Dream Log 1/31/2009 [31 Jan 2009|05:33pm]
My parents were taking me on a trip to Orlando to celebrate National Signing Day.  But before we left, Chris and I decided to pull off a jewel heist in some big mansion.  I went upstairs, took a gold watch and necklace, and then realized I was late to meeting my parents for the trip to Orlando.  So, I left Chris with the rest of the heist.  But, when I got back to my house, I got several text messages from Chris along the lines of "I've been caught, Daniel.  I need to accept this."  All I could think about was how sad it was to see Chris become like Eddie Rios.  Then I turned on the TV and watched Eddie Izzard explain his role as Darth Maul in the Phantom Menace.

It was pretty weird.

Eric Wolf accidentally spilled boiling water on my hand, burning it badly.  I was angry about it, but I decided to watch a Lego movie to cool off.  While watching the movie, I realized some great secret to life (don't remember now what it was).  Then I went to hang out with friends, but Eric was there, so I became angry again.  I showed my hand to the group of friends (I know James was there) and said, "You see this!?!  Now where am I going to go to grad school???  Forget Florida State, I'd be lucky to be at UCF with this!"

Dream Log December 13th [13 Dec 2008|09:11am]
I came home to a surprise party, but I only seemed to know half the people there.  There were 5 Malaysian kids, one of my co-workers, my dad, some other people, and David Polakoff.  David was in my pool, as were most of the attendees.  When I saw him, I jumped in fully-clothed and hugged him.  I told him, "I've missed you, man." I turned to three of the Malaysian kids in the pool and asked, "Who are you?" They told me they were friends of the other two and that they had been needing a party.  I seemed satisfied with the answer and then proceeded to get out of the pool.  My co-worker began to make-out with me, but I pushed her away.  I asked, "Don't you have a boyfriend?" At that moment, she cried and ran away.  Even in the dream I found that moment odd.  Then my dad came out to the pool in only his underwear.  That is when I decided to leave the party.  I went to a tailor to get my suit fixed (I had apparently been wearing one when I jumped in), and while there, I ran into some more friends.  I can't remember who, though.  At some point, I ran into my Soviet politics professor, who warned me about the test.  Then I looked into my pockets, which were now full of what appeared to be pink sun-tan lotion.  I asked the tailor if this could be fixed, as well.  The tailor appeared to be one of the servers from the on-campus dining hall, and she yelled at me, telling me I had to take more care of my suit.   I sheepishly agreed and watched as she rolled the suit along some kind of conveyor.  I woke up.

I just had a dream Jon Stewart, Javarris James, and Graig Cooper gave me an impassioned speech for finals that drew upon earlier events, papers, and finals in my life.  It was quite possibly the greatest dream I've ever had.  It ended with me blurting out "I LIVE FOR THIS!  WOOO!"

Academia [22 Nov 2008|11:03am]
I've had this paper due all semester.  Fifteen pages.  Not really that bad.  But I get nervous about these things, and I have a mental block that just stops me from making steady progress.  This paper's going to go to the wire, and I really don't want it to.  It makes me crazy.  I had a dream last night that I had finally finished it, but then my professor looked at it and said, "You didn't even write about Iraq!  It's the war that's going to define this generation!  You are an idiot!" Then the whole class laughed, and it was really quite awful.  Oh boy.  Leave it to an academician like me to have a nightmare like that.  Ahhh.  Page 4.  I'm still only on page 4.  Every time I think I'm going to write this paper...when I was home a few weeks ago it was worse.  I'd wake up and promise myself I'd do it.  I hardly looked at a book until last week.  When I was here, I wanted to be there.  When I was there, all I could think about was getting back to Coral Gables.  I've been here 4 weeks now.  Waiting for a paper to get done.  Getting softer.  Every minute I procrastinate, the paper gets more daunting.  Every minute my classmates have, their papers get closer to completion.  Each time I looked around the unread books on the floor piled up a little more...

Tonight [05 Nov 2008|02:14am]
We did it.

I want to write something witty or insightful or original.  But crap, I've got nothing to offer other than what I'm feeling, and that's pure joy and pride.  I'm so proud of this country.  I'm so proud of Florida.  And if you went out and voted,  I'm proud of you.  Even more so if you worked for a campaign or furthered this democracy with the open expression of your ideas and passion.

I won't miss the anxieties and tensions associated with the wait 'till the fourth.  Nobody will.  But I will miss the spirit.  The past few weeks especially have felt like the lead up to a big game.  You'd see people on the street and you could nod your head or even start a conversation with them based on their political attire.  And it wasn't awkward.  Kind of like how you could see someone with your team's favorite hat and you could start talking about 'em.  Celebrities kept showing up in Miami and at UM for get-out-the-vote efforts.  Seemingly everybody in our society was connected to this whole thing.  It was cool.

Anyway, I'll articulate more later.

Not Mine, But Good [05 Oct 2008|12:42am]

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…..

* If you grow up in Hawaii , raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'

* Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, yours is a quintessential American story.

* If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

* Name your kids Willow, Trig, and Track, you're a maverick.

* Graduate from Harvard Law School and you are unstable.

* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the State Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive and next in line behind a man in his eighth decade.

* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and then left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a true Christian.

* If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

* If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.

* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America 's.

* If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, that makes it much more clearer now…

Dream Log August 30th, 2008 [30 Aug 2008|08:22am]
The UM/UF game was coming up (although, it was to take place at Dolphin Stadium in the dream), and I offered David Kolesky, Eric Wolf, and David Lynch to come along with me and my dad.  Kolesky hesitated but then decided to go.  He then went online and printed out fake tickets.  When he printed the initial batch, they looked incredibly fake (the annoying blonde chef from the new Friday's commercials was on them).  He then decided to make up a new batch that featured Jack McCoy from Law & Order, and for some reason we both found that to be great and realistic.  I then looked down at my phone and realized I had a voicemail from Lynch.  It wasn't anything special, but for reason, more and more voicemails kept appearing from Lynch, each one more depraved than the last.  Anyway, for some reason, Kolesky and I were out walking through a bunch of slums.  I don't know where we were headed, but we were almost killed multiple times.  One guy tried to run us over.  Not very cool.  We also passed by a guy strung out on heroin, which prompted me to remark, "Look!  It's the guy from 'Punchout!'" A few steps later, I turned to Kolesky and asked, "Hey, where's Eric?" He answered me with, "I don't know.  You never know with his gay-ass." That's when the dream ended.

For the first time in my life, I finally understand what leadership is all about.  I understand what organization is all about.  And while I'm still uncertain of the direction of my life, I feel like, at the very least, I've put together a good twenty years and a structure for the future.

I haven't been particularly happy most of the time.  But I can't deny that this past year has been the most successful and productive of my life.

Dream Log 7/13/2008:

Some kind of huge sporting event is going on.  Feels like the Super Bowl, yet I recognize the Baltimore Orioles as being one of the participants.  For some reason, there's a celebration going on at the BankAtlantic Center for the event, and I decide to go.  As I'm going up the escalator, I see somebody from work and I give him a high-five.  Then "Sweet Caroline" plays throughout the arena.  Don't ask me why that song's appeared in multiple dreams.  Anyway, there's some kind of elaborate, weird celebration that I can't remember too well, and then I find myself at an office party.  I stuff my face with food but eventually grow bored of the game itself.  I go to another room to watch the Heat, and I immediately notice Shawn Marion's kicking ass.  I feel pleased, but for whatever reason I decide to leave.  As I'm walking out, I get a text message from Jenna Salmon reading, "You were right." I have no clue what she's talking about, so I just decide to forget about it.  I then go over to a street corner with the hope of registering a few voters (for the Obama campaign).  For some reason, I'm working with Marcus Hirsh, a sports management major from UM.  Some woman comes up to him and says, "I just love Anderson Hernandez!  And his Facebook profile is so funny!" I feel pissed off Marcus takes credit for it, but I let it go.  Finally, I decide I need groceries, so I walk over to a near-by Publix.  There I run into Shaina Gregory's family, but I decide only to speak with her mom.  I ask her how everybody's doing, she says good, and I bid her adieu.

They keep getting better. [08 Jul 2008|09:50am]
Dream Log 7/8:

Joe, the person I work with the most on the Obama campaign, decided to do canvassing in Gainesville.  I expected to join him and was actually really excited about it.  I figured I'd see David Polakoff and a few others and just get to do work somewhere new.  But Joe decided to take Ivan, and he made it known he only needed one person to help him.  So, I was stuck at home.  Being in an angry mood, I fought with my parents over a bowl of jell-o in the fridge.  This caused me to run away from home.  My running was especially slow, and I wondered why my speed was reminiscent of that when you're being chased in a dream.  I tried to run harder, but I felt even slower and more fatigued.  I figured all of my unhealthy eating had just caught up to me.  But then I woke up within the dream, and it turns out the running away part was all just a dream.  My father explained to me that after the fight we all resolved our problems and went out to a nice dinner at Denny's.  We also talked about how my running in the "dream" was so slow, even though I wasn't being chased or anything.  We pondered why the brain couldn't process normal running in dreams.  Anyway, I was relieved that everything was ok with my family.  And with everybody feeling happy again, my family decided to go to an alligator farm for fun.  Unfortunately, during my stay there, I was attacked by alligators (not shocking) and a wild boar (somewhat surprising).  However, I got away and went over to a near-by fair instead.  There I ran into my boss from work.  He told me a story of how he always wanted to be a radio disc jockey, but how so many others did, too.  He ultimately settled in life, but he felt great.  Then the guy I hate from my work came over, and we all discussed how we had to put the past behind us for the good of the company.  Everything seemed to be resolved, and once again, I felt relieved.  Then my boss offered to give me a ride home, and I accepted gratefully.  For some unexplained reason, he drove a taxi that said "Australian Open" on the back.  I wondered why the steering wheel wasn't on the other side, but I didn't say anything.  We started driving through my neighborhood when I woke up.

Dream Log 7/6/2008 [07 Jul 2008|05:03am]
Mrs. Burgess (my 8th grade English and social studies teacher) was teaching my new English class.  Throughout the class, she kept putting names on the board under the title "Not Getting an A." At one point, my name was put up for being too loud while discussing something.  I protested at the end of class, causing her to go into a monologue about how the world is out there to screw us, so we'd better be ready. For some reason, it inspired me, and "The Final Countdown" started playing.  I then looked around for my schedule, trying to figure out where my next class would be.  I came to the conclusion I had Sports Economics next, and that I had to go to the School of Business.  That got me excited, too.

To which Riley replied, 'Yeah, I know.' Suddenly, in the middle of the test, everybody broke out into "Sweet Caroline."

Dream Log 6/7 [07 Jun 2008|06:41am]
I decided to study abroad again, this time in Russia.  Tony Sparano turned out to be my next-door neighbor and James Stankowicz a classmate.  For some reason, they were overtly conspiring against me, and I was assassinated multiple times in the dream.  Somehow, I kept coming back, and I kept trying to continue my life as a foreign student.  However, a group of students cornered me and it was revealed the hostility had mostly to do with me being a Muslim.  I was killed again, and this time I was brought back to a room full of Muslim clerics chanting "Hell no, we won't go." After it's clear I've regained consciousness, one of them steps forward and says, "Muslims are not looked down upon in high-end Russian society, so maybe we just need to move you."

- I was driving at one point in the dream, simultaneously checking DBL scores on a phone or whatever, when James called me.  He said he could see that I was away from home, and he couldn't wait for me to come back.  I hung up the phone knowing he was going to kill me.
- Tony Sparano spoke some words in English, and some in Polish.  It was explained in the dream that he was actually Polish but had come to Russia by mistake.  He was just really, really intimidating.

Dear Daniel,

Congratulations!

We've reviewed your fellowship application, and I am pleased to offer you a position in the Obama Organizing Fellows program.

Although Barack will campaign vigorously in all 50 states, our need for fellows is particularly high in certain states, and we strongly encourage you to relocate to one of these high-need states to participate in the program.

The program in these high-need states will begin with a training from June 14th to June 16th. Afterwards, fellows will organize for Barack in communities in these states through July 26th.

To accept this offer of admission, you must fill out this form and let us know where you can participate in the program by Saturday, May 31st at 5:00 p.m. CST:

Should you be unable to relocate to one of these selected states, you will still be able to participate in your home state, but the program will begin in mid-July and run through the end of August.

Fellows who participate in high-need states will be given special priority should employment opportunities arise at the end of the program.

If you accept this offer and join the program in one of our high-need states, someone from the campaign will call you next week to welcome you, discuss further details, and answer any questions you have. If you accept in another state, someone from the campaign will call you closer to the time of the start of the program to discuss the details further.

Thank you for all that you've done -- we look forward to meeting you and working with you in the weeks and months ahead.

Dream Log, May 16, 2008:

I was in a bowling alley with Chris Levin, David Polakoff, and my brother.  I was doing really well, and I remember my first game amounting to a 238.  But everybody seemed to grow disinterested with bowling, and went on to different parts of the building.  David left to play billiards, Chris went over to talk to a friend, and I lost sight of my brother.  While searching for my brother, I came across Jamal, who lived on my floor freshman year.  We talked briefly, and then my phone vibrated loudly.  I assured Jamal the sound was not a bowel movement, and away I went.  Then I came across a kid named Muhammad I knew back in high school.  I remember giving him a handshake, but I can't remember if we actually had a conversation.  Then I came across my cousin, who was trying to fit in and be cool at a lane at the far side of the alley.  I told him he should just bowl and have fun, to which he rolled his eyes.  The whole building seemed to be dark, kind of like a Frank Miller comic.   And that's all I remember...

Haha [06 May 2008|10:54pm]
Hillary Clinton's new campaign song is "Our Country."

She is so incredibly ridiculous.

Interesting tidbits from my dream last night

- NCAA Football 2075 was out, and I was psyched.
- I told a guy who cut me in line, "You have a lot of chutzpah, buddy."

It really hit me today. Barack Obama needs to win this race. [23 Apr 2008|12:25am]
I am sick of the politics of fear.  I've been sick of them since 9/11 became a punchline.  A political term.  A term for division.

So, you better vote for Clinton or else?  I can't stand it anymore.

Obama's special for his message of hope.  I know it sounds corny and played out to say that, but it is a refreshing message all the same.  I've been supporting Obama for months now, but I haven't really done anything.  That changes today.

I don't like this woman, and I honestly used to.

Garfield Hates Mondays [14 Apr 2008|10:13pm]
This has been the weirdest day of my life.  By far.

- I had written a satire for The Hurricane (student newspaper here) weeks ago, and eventually I had given up on it being published.  I woke up, checked my mail, and saw that the new edition of the paper had my article.  Anyway, the article created a huge buzz around campus, and it made for a very interesting day onto itself.

- At some point in the day, I was forbidden by Hecht Residential College from ever writing an opinion piece in The Hurricane again (otherwise they'd take away my academic fellow position).

- I was denied membership in the Honor Council, despite being told earlier I was definitely getting it.

- Anderson Cooper spoke at UM today, and this guy randomly gave me passes for the cocktail party afterwards with Cooper and all the rich UM alums and bigwigs.  I was chatting it up with Anderson Cooper and President Shalala.  So random and so amazing.

- I was denied an internship spot with Congressman Wexler, despite being told earlier I was definitely getting it.
